Our Level 3 Certificate in Practical Horticulture is a practical qualification which provides you with a route to employment in professional horticulture. It assesses a range of essential horticultural skills, and supports career development for those already working in the profession. It also provides a foundation for further training in the field of horticulture.

This course is highly regarded by employers in the Horticultural Industry and will offer you the best qualification to support career development including supervisory and managerial roles.

Our horticulture students have access to an exciting range of resources at College including our fully equipped glasshouse and laboratory facilities, small scale gardens and an extensive estate.

  • Collecting and testing of soil samples and specifying adjustments for horticulture
  • Collecting, preparing and propagating from seed
  • Establishing and maintaining a range of plant types and forms
  • Identification of a range of common garden plants, weeds, pests, diseases and disorders
  • Management of green spaces, landscaped areas and ornamental gardens

You will need to wear work trousers, a plain polo shirt, work boots and garden gloves. You will also need a sun hat for the summer months and a warm waterproof coat for winter.

This course will take place on a Monday, starting at 09:30am and finishing at 3:30pm.

A range of methods will be used to assess this qualification. They include summative assessment of skills by your tutor at Moulton College, and a range of summative short answer written tests.

You will have gained a range of horticultural knowledge relevant to employment in various roles in commercial plant production and the horticultural sector, such as a head gardener or supervisor in private, public, or botanic gardens or parks and urban green spaces.

We recommend that students have obtained their RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical horticulture, or an equivalent qualification, before the start of the course.

For any candidates who are undertaking RHS Level 2 Certificates in the Principles of Horticulture, we recommend that you have passed exams, before the start of the course.

This course is a stand-alone qualification, which can be achieved and certified separately. However, it also forms a half of the RHS Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice of Horticulture.
