John chiseling block of stone

John | Level 2 Stonemasonry

John studied Level 2 Stonemasonry and recently completed a week long placement at Exeter Cathedral.

The opportunity gave John the chance to work alongside experienced cathedral masons, developing his practical skills and gaining valuable insight into heritage restoration projects. His placement was supported by a bursary from the Counties Heritage Foundation, helping to cover travel expenses.

During his time at Exeter Cathedral, John worked on two Doulting stone spandrel pieces for a materials example linked to the cathedral's new cloister walk. He interpreted templates into setting-out drawings, created templates and hand-worked the stone himself.

The masons here are very friendly and welcoming, and I've learned a lot in the few days I've been here. It has been a fantastic experience for me!
John, Level 2 Stonemason

John made a strong impression on the team at Exeter Cathedral. Owen, one of the cathedral's masons, praised both his work ethic and craftsmanship.

John was punctual, diligent and hardworking despite the heatwave and record temperatures. He took on information, knowledge and instruction well and applied it proficiently. His masonry was excellent for someone who's only been doing it for as little time as he has. It was a pleasure to host John for a week. He's a genuinely nice guy with integrity and passion for the craft.
