Our Level 3 Diploma in Furniture Design and Making develops your skills by taking you through the complete process of furniture design and production, from researching the history of furniture design to the making of your own designs into finished practical pieces.

Students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College. Our state-of-the-art workshops are equipped with specialist tools and resources for a wide range of creative craft subjects.

Guided by our specialist staff and expert guest lecturers you’ll develop your skills in both wood machining and hand-crafting furniture, to equip you for employment or further study.

Guided by our expert lecturers you will learn the full process of building hand-crafted wooden furniture. Through practical and theoretical learning you will develop fundamental skills of prototype design and technical drawing, research and product development all the way through to the final product, delivering a range of inch-perfect hand finishes. Additionally you will engage in the supervision of a furniture workshop to give you the complete experience of a commercial environment. You will cover modules including:

  • Consolidating and applying a knowledge and understanding of health and safety within furniture making environments.
  • Developing personal research and product development skills in furniture making and applying these in designing intermediate furniture products.
  • Developing the ITC skills and techniques required to produce intermediate geometric, pictorial and working drawings using computer programs.
  • Continuing to develop and enhance skills required to produce a prototype design in furniture making.
  • Developing the hand skills and techniques required to produce advanced geometric, pictorial and working drawings.
  • Manufacturing a range of advanced items of furniture, using a range of hardwoods, fixtures and fittings.
  • Developing a knowledge of the History of Furniture and an understanding of how it has and continues to develop, and then applying this knowledge to prototype design.
  • Developing an understanding of supervision within furniture making environments.
  • Developing and applying a knowledge and understanding of a range of hand finishing methods in furniture making.

Hi-Vis and Work Safety Boots are required to undertake this course. All of our equipment is supplied by Baca.

This is a full time course taking place on three days per week from 9.00am - 4:30pm. There will be a mix of practical and theoretical work which are split into 1 hour - 1.45 hour lessons. You will have regular breaks including a lunch break.

Vocational and professional qualifications are taught through college based theory and practical lessons with further learning and understanding developed via directed self-study. Assessment consists of internally set coursework and assignments, although some professional and vocational qualifications may require the achievement of externally set assessments.

You could progress to a degree in Furniture Design and Making. Alternatively, you may go into employment as an assistant furniture maker, furniture designer or wood machinist.

Completion of Level 2 Diploma in Furniture Making.
