This study programme is designed to provide a solid foundation in animal care and husbandry and is suitable for anyone looking to progress onto further education, training or employment in the animal industry.

This course aims to develop confidence, knowledge and skills and is the ideal platform for progression onto our Level 3 provision.

Animal Care students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College, including our amazing Animal Welfare Centre which houses over 130 different domestic and exotic species, including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates, with our monkeys and wallabies being amongst the favourites.

Guided by our expert lecturers you will develop your animal care knowledge and skills, learning about safe working, animal health, biology, behaviour, feeding, accommodation and wildlife & conservation.

You will also continue to develop your English and maths skills which are vital for success in the animal industry. You will complete work experience internally working at our Animal Welfare Centre and complete external work experience in the animal care industry as part of your qualification.

This is a full time study programme, including three days of college attendance, one work experience day (in an external animal related establishment) and one study day. The average college day runs from 9am - 4:30pm where there will be a mixture of practical and theory animal care lessons, in addition to English, maths and personal development lessons.

In addition to your college work you will also be required to complete 150 hours of work experience during the course.

You will be taught through a mixture of college based practical and theory lessons, with further learning and understanding developed via directed self-study.

Assessment consists of assignments, online exams and a practical assessment.

After successful completion of the course, many students progress on to study a Level 3 Diploma / Extended Diploma in Animal Management or an apprenticeship.

Alternatively, you could go into careers including Animal Technician, Kennel/Cattery Assistant, Dog Groomer or Zoo Keeper.

Four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above (to include English and Science), or a Level 1 Diploma with a Merit grade in a related subject.
